Acupuncture for dysmenorrhea
Few recent studies show how Acupuncture can be effective in decreasing the discomfort associated with painful periods (Dysmenorrhea). In a particular study researchers had 66 young women who experienced painful periods without an underlying cause such as endometriosis or a fibroid.
In this study, the first group received electro acupuncture on hands and ankles at specific acupuncture points (LI4, SP6). The second group received electro acupuncture on non-acupuncture points. After 8wks of treatment the first group noticed a significant decrease in pain while the secondary "sham" acupuncture group received no benefit ( Wu LL, Su CH, et al; 2012)
Studies such as above are a step in right direction to show how acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can be effective in treating common gynecological problems.
